Sources

Where the thoughts came from. Nobody cites anything any more — an idea arrives third-hand with no way to find out who actually said it — so this is the list, and each one says which of my thoughts came out of it. A source is here because a thought needed it, not because I finished the book.

book1

  • Phaedrus Plato

The source of the oldest version of the argument this corpus keeps returning to. Socrates objects to writing on the grounds that it will produce forgetfulness — that people will stop carrying knowledge and start pointing at it.

What was used: the objection itself, taken seriously rather than as a curiosity. It is the first recorded case of the floor-and-ceiling confusion, and the reason "tools make us stupider" cannot be treated as a new worry about AI.

Nothing public has come out of this one yet.
